About Meriwidoz History

You know when we all look back on our lives, we can see where the high points and the low points were. At the time they are going on, it's often impossible to see over the hurdle. But, I've always been one to look on the bright side; to think that it will always get better.  Well, believe me,it does.. In January 2000, just a few days into the new century, my husband of 42 years, Dan, passed away suddenly. I had just met the new lady pastor of our local church and we had gone to one service there.  She and I had talked over the phone about our animals and how much we loved them.  When I called her, she was there for me. Having just lost her husband a few months before, she realized what I was going through.  So, with Devine guidance, we became best friends.

The first time she came to my home, we were talking and suddenly my Ragdoll, Micah, just strolled through the room. Jan got up and followed him, trying to get a better look at him. She turned to me and asked, "What kind of cat is THAT? He is gorgeous!" I explained that Micah was a Ragdoll, pet quality because he was miss marked, but still very beautiful none the less. Jan had never heard of Ragdolls so she was all ears.

Just a few days after my husband's passing, a breeder friend of mine called asking if I could help her raise a litter of kittens as she was sick in bed with the flu and needed some help.  Of course, I offered. The following day, Jan and I were off to get the mama and three 7 week old kittens. Those babies were very good for me at that time as they kept me busy working with them, playing with them and loving on them. They kept me from being sad because they kept me so busy. Every day I looked forward to getting home after work so I could play with "my babies".  Soon these babies were ready to go to homes.  I was fortunate enough to get the pick of the litter and she still is my sweet Payton..

By now, Jan and I were both hooked on Ragdolls.  In the past, both Jan and I had raised and showed dogs so we had some idea of what was involved.  The more we studied the Ragdolls, the more web sites we visited and the more breeders we spoke with, the more we wanted to become breeders ourselves. We finally chose a breeder boy as our foundation male, Soulmates Bodacious of Meriwidoz (aka Bow-D).

Oh, yes, I must tell you how the name of Meriwidoz evolved. Jan and I had been to the home supply store and purchased some ladders and boards to make cat trees. We somehow got all of these supplies crammed into her little station wagon.  The only way to get it all in was to put the boards between the driver and passenger seats. We were on our way home and were stopped at a traffic light.  In order to look at each other, we really had to peep over the boards (10” x 12’ boards). We got tickled at ourselves… thinking who in their right mind besides us would be out on a stormy night like this… gathering cat tree supplies… and having such a good time doing it.  Jan started singing, "We are the merry widows". We were so determined that loosing our beloved husbands wasn't going to get us down.  Well, the name stuck even though we changed the spelling just a little. It was after then we developed our Meriwidoz lines.

Even though Jan is no longer co-owner of Meriwidoz, the cattery has always really been at my place.  My love for Ragdolls and the way in which our cattery began help to remind me of how precious the Ragdolls are to me.

I have since found another love, my husband, Carl. I was about to think I’d never remarry when he came into my life. He loves our cats as much as I do. Since he is a widower, we chose to continue with the cattery name of Meriwidoz.

Please take a look inside at our beloved Ragdolls. It is our hope that you like what you see. If you would like more information about Meriwidoz Ragdolls, please send an E-mail.

Enjoy your visit with the Meriwidoz Ragdolls.

Sincerely,

Peg Horne Nelson
